Now in all seriousness, Ulta Beauty is, by far, the largest retailer of beauty products in the whole of the United States. Don’t believe me? Just look at how many stores they’ve got! In their 24 years of existence, up until August 2014, they had managed to gather 714 stores. Fast forward by one year, and that number has gone to over 817 in 48 states.
While that is certainly not the biggest location expansion that a company has ever exhibited, it most definitely is quite a lot for a beauty company. It was founded back in the fruitful year of 1990, in the small suburb of Bolingbrook, Illinois, right by Chicago. At first, it bore the name Ulta Salon, Cosmetics and Fragrance. As you may have realized by now, the innovation that the company brought to the market was the fact that each of its locations also had a salon. That was the idea of Richard E. George – the company’s founder, who had been formerly employed at Osco Drug, Inc.
Ulta Beauty Growth
Apparently, George had quite a few ties at the drug company, as after he stepped down, Terry J. Hanson, another former Osco employee, became the CEO of Ulta. During his time, Hanson brought along even more OSCO veterans, to the point of hiring Charles “Rick” Weber as the Chief Financial Officer. All in all, every CEO that passed through this position at Ulta enjoyed major success.
After Hanson stepped down, the company was run by Lyn Kirby, formerly of Sears, in a joint leadership with Weber. The two ran together until September 2006, when Rick left. Kirby continued alone until April 2010, when the leadership was passed to Carl “Chuck” Rubin. So, the new CEO managed to bring the company to such heights, that in 2010, he became one of the highest-paid executives in Chicago. However, Rubin only lasted for three years in this position, and in July 2013, the company was again taken over by Mary Dillon, a former PepsiCo and McDonald’s executive.
But all these details about company leadership are actually pretty unimportant. What is much more significant is how the company treats its customers! In their over 817 locations, the company has dedicated an average of 10,000 square feet to make-up, cosmetics, beauty products, hair products, and all that goody-goody stuff that everyone wants. And then there are the saloons: taking up an average of 950 square feet from the area of each location.

Ulta Beauty usually has positive reviews on the internet. However, with over 800 locations, some customers are bound to be dissatisfied.
Di Anna from Thornton, Connecticut, says that she had spent quite a lot of money at her nearest Ulta location. However, she has become dissatisfied with it as she mentions that it’s gone downhill over the last year. She says that the store is dirty, understocked, and generally poor in products in high demand. Not nice.
Ruth from Mission Viejo, California, complains about the quality of the online store. She says that she’s ordered quite a few products from the company’s website, but has yet to manage to buy. She also mentions short, unhelpful answers to her problems from employees via email.
