Last Saturday was the day from Hell regarding my experience at my friendly Kroger store. I had taken my comforter to the laundromat because it was too big for my washing machine and found that they don’t take checks any longer (hadn’t been there in a long time since I did not need to dry clean much any longer). The owner gave me 4.00 worth of change and told me I could go to the bank and get the money and come back. I went to the bank and found since I now have a card with a chip, my pin number had changed and I could not remember what it was. So, I thought ok I’ll go to Kroger and buy the few groceries I need and get cash back…..I needed a pin there also and..of course did not remember it. So, I asked if I could write a check…and I was told yes. So I wrote the check 35.88 (included was 20.00 cash back). My check was checked and rechecked and a young man was called to ask me when was the last time I cashed a check at Kroger. I replied that it had been a long time since I always use my cash card. Had I written a check in the last year at Kroger….well no, I just said I use the self check out and use my cash card. NOT ONCE did someone suggest that I go to the Service desk to see if I could cash my check there, not once was there another suggestion. I left….very upset…but then I came back to speak to the manager.
I have shopped at this Kroger store for the last 16 years….16 years!!! Never written a bad check and this is the way I was being treated. I asked for the manager who came very quickly. He indicated he was new but that he would try to help. I told him that I tried to cash a check and the reason why and then I just started crying because it was so embarrassing. I had the check in my hand and told him that I have been shopping in this store for the last 16 years. I was a loyal customer, and felt I was not being respected as such. He listened but did not hear what I said. All I wanted to do was write a check for the 15.88 groceries I bought and get 20.00 back in order that I could pay the lady at the laundromat. He said he was sorry but could not do anything if I did not have my pin number……he had not been listening. I walked out of your store. I came back about an hour later after my comforter was done at the laudromat and went to self check out to pay for my groceries. I placed my card in the card reader…it asked me if I wanted any money and I pressed NO….I didn’t need it any more and besides I did not remember my pin anyway. The system shut down I called for an attendant 4 times until I finally stopped her as she walked by me and pointed out that there was a problem. She tried to figure out what it was and then asked me to come to her register to finish checking out. I placed my card in the reader and once again said no to wanting extra cash and I was finished. The girl then waved to the other girl at the regular cash register (where I had been an hours or so ago) and it seems I was free to go. I then took your plastic card off my key chain and handed it to her and said “I don’t want it any longer” and I meant every word.

Every time that I go to my local Kroger store, I have to bag my own groceries. Kroger loves to boast about how they take special time and attention to hire disabled/needy people in their communities in order to provide them with jobs to support themselves, but every time I’m at my Kroger checking out with my boatload of products, there is no grocery bagger. I always end up recruiting one of my kids or doing it myself if it’s a mid-morning trip, and I find it pretty ridiculous. They should be paying me if I have to do the bagger’s job.
Hannah Rivers says
Have you spoken with a manager? We hope this situation will get sorted.
Dwayne Banet says
You don’t have to bag your own groceries, you choose to. They can’t start another order until yours is completed. Simply wait until someone bags them for you.
Hannah Rivers says
Thank you for sharing that!
